A formal peace agreement was reached only when the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Versailles\">Treaty of Versailles<\/a>&nbsp;was signed the following year.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The date is a national holiday in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_holidays_in_France\">France<\/a>, and was a national holiday in many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_I\">Allies of World War I<\/a>&nbsp;nations, several of whom have since changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to either&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remembrance_Day\">Remembrance Day<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_of_Nations\">Commonwealth of Nations<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veterans_Day\">Veterans Day<\/a>&nbsp;in the United States.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In some countries Armistice Day coincides with other public holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"History_in_Allied_countries\">History in Allied countries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Armistice Day celebration was held at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buckingham_Palace\">Buckingham Palace<\/a>, commencing with King&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_V\">George V<\/a>&nbsp;hosting a &#8220;Banquet in Honour of the President of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Third_Republic\">French Republic<\/a>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raymond_Poincar%C3%A9\">Raymond Poincar\u00e9<\/a>)<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;during the evening hours of 10 November 1919. The first official Armistice Day events were subsequently held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of 11 November 1919,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;which included a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two-minute_silence\">two-minute silence<\/a>&nbsp;as a mark of respect for those who died in the war and those left behind.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar ceremonies developed in other countries during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inter-war_period\">inter-war period<\/a>. In South Africa, for example, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memorable_Order_of_Tin_Hats\">Memorable Order of Tin Hats<\/a>&nbsp;had by the late 1920s developed a ceremony whereby the toast of &#8220;Fallen Comrades&#8221; was observed not only in silence but darkness, all except for the &#8220;Light of Remembrance&#8221;, with the ceremony ending with the Order&#8217;s anthem &#8220;Old Soldiers Never Die&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-11\">[Note 1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Britain, beginning in 1939, the two-minute silence was moved to the Sunday nearest to 11 November in order not to interfere with wartime production should 11 November fall on a weekday.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armistice_Day?fbclid=IwY2xjawGevnRleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHXw4vWR5B6F7-_DPpp1dbl55o8HczPXAr44ZABmArkwn5NWQpXiAYsseCA_aem_Qs7dbh_12EsaQThqHNtz3A#cite_note-12\">[11]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;This became&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remembrance_Sunday\">Remembrance Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commemorations of November 11 were initially focused on honoring the military dead of the First World War and the return to peace.&nbsp;Just prior to or after World War II, many countries changed the name of the holiday, several changed the focus to include all veterans of their armed services, and a few honor their war dead both uniformed and civilian.
