{"id":151681,"date":"2019-11-13T10:15:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T10:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glass-cage.com\/dianas_blog\/?p=151681"},"modified":"2019-11-13T10:15:42","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T10:15:42","slug":"social-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glass-cage.com\/dianas_blog\/2019\/11\/13\/social-murder\/","title":{"rendered":"Social murder"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Social murder<\/strong>&nbsp;is a phrase used by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friedrich_Engels\">Friedrich Engels<\/a>&nbsp;in his 1845 work&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Condition_of_the_Working_Class_in_England\">The Condition of the Working-Class in England<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;whereby &#8220;the class which at present holds social and political control&#8221; (i.e. the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bourgeoisie\">bourgeoisie<\/a>) &#8220;places hundreds of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proletarians\">proletarians<\/a>&nbsp;in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-Engels1845-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;This was in a different category to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murder\">murder<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manslaughter\">manslaughter<\/a>&nbsp;committed by individuals against one another, as social murder explicitly was committed by the political and social elite against the poorest in society.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-Engels1845-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This quotation begs careful study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another such that death results, we call the deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call his deed murder. But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live \u2014 forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence \u2014 knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than of commission. But murder it remains.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-Engels1845-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Although originally written with regard to the English city of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester\">Manchester<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victorian_era\">Victorian era<\/a>, the term has controversially been used by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Left-wing\">left-wing<\/a>\u00a0politicians such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_McDonnell\">John McDonnell<\/a>\u00a0in the 21st century to describe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conservative_Party_(UK)\">Conservative<\/a>\u00a0economic policy as well as events such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grenfell_Tower_fire\">Grenfell Tower fire<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Lancaster University professor Chris Grover recently used the term to refer to Conservative public policy in the United Kingdom.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0York University professor Dennis Raphael used it to describe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Ontario\">Conservative<\/a>\u00a0public policy in Ontario, Canada.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2007 Canadian economists Robert Chernomas and Ian Hudson of the University of Manitoba used the term to refer to conservative economics in their book Social Murder: And Other Shortcomings of Conservative Economics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arpbooks.org\/Books\/S\/Social-Murder\">https:\/\/arpbooks.org\/Books\/S\/Social-Murder<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_murder<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Social murder&nbsp;is a phrase used by&nbsp;Friedrich Engels&nbsp;in his 1845 work&nbsp;The Condition of the Working-Class in England&nbsp;whereby &#8220;the class which at present holds social and political control&#8221;
