Diana The Huntress & Moon Goddess<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In Roman mythology<\/a>, Diana<\/strong> was the goddess of the hunt<\/a>, being associated<\/strong> with wild animals and woodland, and also of the moon<\/a>. In literature she was the equivalent<\/a> of the Greek goddess<\/a> Artemis<\/a>, though in cult beliefs<\/a> she was Italic<\/a>, not Greek, in origin. Diana was worshiped in ancient Roman religion<\/a> and is currently revered in Roman Neopaganism<\/a> and Stregheria<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Along with her main attributes, Diana was an emblem of chastity<\/a>. Oak<\/a> groves were especially sacred to her. According to mythology, Diana was born with her twin<\/a> brother Apollo<\/a> on the island of Delos<\/a>, daughter of Jupiter<\/a> and Latona<\/a>. Diana made up a triad with two other Roman deities: Egeria<\/a> the water nymph, her servant and assistant midwife; and Virbius<\/a>, the woodland god.<\/p>\n

Diana was initially just the hunting goddess,[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup> associated with wild animals and woodlands. She also later became a moon goddess<\/a>, supplanting Luna<\/a>.[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Diana was worshiped at a festival on August 13<\/a><\/span>,[1]<\/a><\/sup> when King Servius Tullius<\/a>, himself born a slave, dedicated her shrine on the Aventine Hill<\/a> in the mid-sixth century BC. Being placed on the Aventine, and thus outside the pomerium<\/a><\/em>, meant that Diana’s cult essentially remained a ‘foreign’ one, like that of Bacchus<\/a>; she was never officially ‘transferred’ to Rome as Juno<\/a> was after the sack of Veii<\/a>. It seems that her cult originated in Aricia<\/a>,[2]<\/a><\/sup> where her priest, the Rex Nemorensis<\/a> remained. There the simple open-air fane was held in common by the Latin tribes,[3]<\/a><\/sup> which Rome aspired to weld into a league and direct. Diana of the wood was soon thoroughly Hellenized,[4]<\/a><\/sup> “a process which culminated with the appearance of Diana beside Apollo in the first lectisternium<\/a><\/em> at Rome”.[5]<\/a><\/sup> Diana was regarded with great reverence by lower-class citizens and slaves<\/a>; slaves could receive asylum in her temples.<\/p>\n

Though some Roman patrons ordered marble replicas of the specifically Anatolian “Diana” of Ephesus, where the Temple of Artemis<\/a> stood, Diana was usually depicted for educated Romans in her Greek guise. If she is accompanied by a deer, as in the Diana of Versailles<\/a><\/em> (illustration, above right<\/em>) this is because Diana was the patroness of hunting. The deer may also offer a covert reference to the myth of Acteon<\/a> (or Actaeon), who saw her bathing naked. Diana transformed Acteon into a stag and set his own hunting dogs to kill him.<\/p>\n

Worship of Diana is mentioned in the Bible. In Acts of the Apostles<\/a>, Ephesian metal smiths who felt threatened by Saint Paul’s preaching of Christianity, jealously rioted in her defense, shouting “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”<\/em>\u00a0(Acts 19:28, New English Bible<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
